Portuguese multinational energy corporation Galp, in partnership with the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) and energy company Custos, has revealed the discovery of light oil at the Mopane-1X well in Namibia. This marks the sixth discovery in the country since 2022 and is located in Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 83 within the Orange Basin.

During drilling operations, Galp reported the presence of a column of light oil in reservoir-bearing sands of high quality. The project partners are now focusing on assessing the commercial viability of the discovery, with plans to conduct a Drill Stem Test in the upcoming weeks.

Knowledge Katti, Chairman and CEO of Custos, commented, "The preliminary results of the initial exploration campaign on PEL 83 demonstrate the expanding scope and potential of Namibia’s Orange Basin."

The drill rig will continue exploring deeper targets at the Mopane-1X well before moving to the Mopane-2X well site, allowing the partners to fully understand the extent of the discovery.

NAMCOR emphasized the significance of the discovery, stating, "This marks a momentous step in the Namibian oil and gas journey," further adding, "It’s not just an achievement for us but a beacon of hope for Namibia’s economic future."
