Namibia has been selected as the host country for the inaugural Global African Hydrogen Summit scheduled for next September. The three-day summit, endorsed by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, aims to convene global leaders, government officials, industry experts, project developers, investors, and technologists to facilitate investments into bankable hydrogen and green energy projects.
Green hydrogen is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, particularly in challenging sectors like steel manufacturing and aviation.
Namibia, blessed with abundant solar and wind energy resources and vast, sparsely populated land, stands poised to produce low-cost green hydrogen. The country has been actively investing in research and development of green hydrogen technologies, with support from international partners such as Germany. Namibia leads one of the largest hydrogen developments on the African continent. In May, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy inked a deal for the next phase of its $10-billion green hydrogen project, slated to produce 125,000 tons by 2026.
Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, has underscored Namibia’s dedication to becoming the sustainable energy capital of Africa and utilizing hydrogen development as a driver for economic growth and job creation.
